Ginebra signs rugged NBA player as import
SWEPT by Alaska Milk in the best-of-seven semifinal round of the recent PBA Philippine Cup, Barangay Ginebra expects to bounce back strong in the Fiesta Conference which begins on March 21.
The Gin Kings have brought in rugged 6-foot-6 guard Awvee Storey as import and acquired Yancy de Ocampo from Air21 in exchange for Rich Alvarez and Doug Kramer.
Storey played a total of 59 games in the NBA for the New Jersey Nets, the Washington Wizards and the Milwaukee Bucks. He has a career average fof 2.4 points.
Born on April 18, 1977 in Chicago, Storey played for the Proviso West High School where he was named to the All-Start team in Illinois. He later attended New Hampton Prep in 1996–97 where he averaged 30 points and 12 boards.
In college, he spent his freshman season at the University of Illinois and then moved to the Arizona State University. He posted 16 double-doubles in his 85-game career. In 2000–01, he earned Pac-10 Honorable Mention honours, after posting career-highs in points (13.1) and rebounds (9.1).
Storey earned his bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree with concentrations in communications and sociology at ASU. In the summer of 2001, he worked for Fox Sports Arizona as a production department intern.
He was undrafted in the NBA but has taken his act to Venezuela, New Zealand and South Korea.
A downside though is that Storey and former Wizards teammate Gilbert Arenas were once arrested during the 2006 Memorial Day weekend in Miami Beach for refusing to obey police. The charges later were dropped.
On Dec. 21 of the same year, Storey punched 7-2 Dakota teammate Martynas Adriuskevicius on the head during practice and resulting in a skull fracture, severe concussion and a two-centimeter hematoma on the left side of his brain. For that, he was suspended indefinitely by the NBDL. — Barry Pascua
